Electoral Literacy Club (ELC)
ELC: Committed to strengthening democracy
About the Electoral Literacy Club
The Electoral Literacy Club (ELC) is the brainchild of the Election Commission of India (ECI) aimed at strengthening the democratic ethos and awareness in the country. The Dubrajpur Block Development Office, Government of West Bengal under the leadership of the Honorable Block Development Officer (BDO) took the noble initiative of bringing this idea to life and he issued formal directions to the Honorable Principal of Krishna Chandra College, Hetampur to form such a club. The Department of Political Science was thought of as the right and capable department to undertake the responsibility by the Honorable Principal. It thus was directed to take the mission forward. As mentioned earlier, the club's primary aim is to spread awareness about democracy and democratic processes among the student community and the public in general. The club was formally started on 26.04.2024 with the Honorable Principal's inauguration of the Electoral Literacy Club’s Wall Magazine. The faculty members of the Department of Political Science and the student members were present on the occasion. Though currently nascent, the club has some ambitious aims for the future. Two specific tasks the club is committed to undertake in the future are Voters’ education drives and subsequent betterment in electoral participation. It plans to organize periodic discussions and debate competitions revolving around the concepts of democracy, voter awareness, voting rights, electoral systems, and processes, impending political issues, etc. The club also plans to collaborate with local educational institutions and electoral authorities to promote civic engagement. Apart from this it also aims to come out with interesting educational materials to enhance student’s understanding of electoral processes and make them aware of their stakes in the larger democratic eco-system. With the blessings and guidance of the local government officials and the Honorable Principal of the college, the members are confident that the club will be able to contribute to empowering India’s democracy.
